Elaine Luria is the U.S. Representative for Virginia's 2nd congressional district, elected in 2018. She is a Navy veteran and a Democrat running for Congress in 2020. Elaine applied to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis at age 17, graduating in 1997 with a degree in physics and history and a minor in French. She served in the U.S. Navy for 20 year and was one of the first women to serve her entire career on ships, ultimately becoming executive officer of the nuclear missile UAA Anzio. She retired with the rank of commander. When Luria retired from the Navy in 2017, she founded an arts and crafts business. The business has created ten jobs in the community, donated fifty thousand dollars to charity, and generated a quarter of a million tax dollars. In Congress, Luria’s core values are security, equality, and prosperity. For her, security encompasses affordable healthcare, Social Security, and Medicare. Equality includes equal treatment regardless of sex, gender identity, race, religion, or sexual orientation. Prosperity takes in infrastructure, jobs, and educational opportunities. Luria favors universal background checks on gun buyers. She opposes all efforts to repeal or dismantle the Affordable Care Act. She believes President Trump "enlist[ed] the help of a foreign leader to influence and malign a potential political opponent to affect the outcome of our next election all under guise of trying to fight corruption." Elaine and her husband have lived in Norfolk for 20 years and are proud to raise their daughter in this diverse, vibrant community.
